Family Mediation Practicum – Family Mediation Training Ontario

June 24 - June 26

Is a 21-hour course to help students to develop their own unique practical, hands-on skills in managing family mediations. Taught by Margot Hallman and Cathryn Paul.

Students will:

  • Manage a complex case from start to finish, including:
    • Managing the documentation
    • Conducting individual interviews to screen for appropriateness and process design
    • Designing and Structuring the appropriate process
    • Building and working with an interdisciplinary team of professionals
    • Opening the mediation
    • Facilitating storytelling
    • Framing the issues
    • Forming the agenda
    • Structuring Dialogue, by using effective questioning, pacing, active listening skills, reframing, and other skills used to generate an understanding of the goals, interests and needs of the parties
    • Managing emotionally-laden discussions
    • Generating options and dealing with impasse
    • Reporting and documentation
    • Dealing with unforeseen developments
    • Preparing a mediation report
    • Responding to client communications before, during and after mediation
  • Learn about all of the above-mentioned skills in lecture format
  • Practice these skills themselves
  • Participate in discussion groups to analyze and debrief
  • Discuss ethical and legal issues that arise in mediations
  • Observe a demonstration of a mediation opening and the use of effective questioning, active listening and reframing
  • Hear from experienced mediators in person and on video about challenging situations and how they have dealt with them.
