Managing Domestic Violence in Child Protection and Family Law Cases Legal and Clinical Perspectives

An understanding about intimate partner violence is essential for those who work in the area of family law. Our keynote speaker, Howard Hurwitz, MSW, RSW, Registered Social Worker, will provide his valuable insight on the following topics:
– What is Intimate Partner Violence (IPV)
– Impact of IPV and conflict on children
– Strategies for cases involving IPV from the perspective of both the alleged abuser and victim
– How to address allegations of abuse: discerning the facts and assessing truth
– Professional and personal bias

Following the presentation by our keynote speaker, our panel of lawyers and our judicial chair, will present their insight and tips regarding the following topics:
– Managing your case when there are allegations of IPV
– How to manage your client when the client is the victim who is presenting evidence of IPV
– How to manage your clients when there are allegations of abuse against them
– Male lawyers: approaches for representing women in cases involving IPV
– Approaches for addressing safety considerations for the clients and for the children in the case
– How to ensure that there is a focus on “best interests” of the children
– How CAS investigates and provides service to families when allegations of IPV are made/verified
– Child, Youth and Family Services Act: Lawyers’ professional obligations (duty to report)
