UNCONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS

Unconference 2018 highlights diversity, inclusion, cultural understanding and innovation in FDR.

We set the bar high at FDRIO, and our second bi-annual unconference exceeded all expectations!

“FDRethink The Future” brought out a standing-room only crowd who interacted with our presenters, shared new ideas, and went home energized and enthusiastic.

Highlights of the day included:

  • the exceptional presentation on diversity and inclusion in family mediation, arbitration and parenting coordination by the exceptional Larissa Crawford.
    • a huge circle led by Aboriginal Legal Services, demonstrating aboriginal conflict resolution principles, one so powerful that participants were brought to tears;
    • the Diversity Forum dialogue that engaged many members and guests in a thoughtful “next steps” reflection.
  • the delightful reflections of Madam Justice Gloria Epstein of the Ontario Court of Appeal.

More than 30 speakers shared professional insights and opinions about FDR, fostering a warm and safe environment to explore new pathways for the future of FDR.

We hope you enjoyed the event, and we look forward to seeing you in 2020!

Keynote Presenter

FDRIO is excited to announce a keynote presentation from legal trailblazer, the Honourable Justice Gloria J. Epstein. Justice Epstein will take us on a look back through the history of Family Law and mediation while exploring how our processes intersect with other jurisdictions.

Madam Justice Epstein invites you to a roundtable discussion following her presentation to share ideas and experiences that will influence change for the future. An opportunity not to be missed!

Q: What is an unconference?
A: An unconference is a robust gathering of professionals with ideas and experiences to share. Those who come can listen and learn, and— if they want— speak. Registrants offer their proposed topics and the group votes for what they want to see and hear. The day is dynamic, fluid, and energetic, with lots of opportunity for discussion and networking. Great ideas and many new friendships emerged from our last unconference.
+
Q: Who can come?
A: Anyone! We offer a low rate and advance registration to FDRIO members as an exclusive member benefit. After April 1, 2018, any remaining tickets can be purchased by non-FDRIO members. Our last unconference sold out— we actually had to turn people away.
+
Q: What kinds of topics can I present on?
A: Practically anything that is FDR-related. Topics at the last one ranged from elder mediation, mediation-arbitration, coaching, family violence and tax updates to making more welcoming processes and a musical presentation on finding daily inspiration.
+
Q: Will there by any structured presentations?
A: Yes! We will have one fabulous keynote speaker. Stay tuned to learn more!
